“Kashmir Awareness Campaign during 2012 Olympic Games in London”

Press Release (London 27 July 2012): Athletes from over two hundred countries are taking part in one of the largest sporting events-the Olympic Games- in London as a manifestation of   universal goodwill and fraternal relations amongst the nations and Peoples of the world. Millions of people throughout the world however continue to suffer and endure oppression at the hands of some of the states represented at the Games.

17 million people of Kashmir are one such glaring example of   suffering and oppression at the hands of the Indian State. Over 700,000 Indian troops are actively deployed in the Indian held part of the forcibly divided state of Kashmir, who openly indulges in massive abuse of human rights, rapes, destruction of property and disappearance of innocent youths.

More recently, thousands of unmarked graves were discovered in many areas of Kashmir as reported by Amnesty International. Thousand of Kashmiri people are still languishing in prisons across India. The revelation of these unmarked graves has increased the fear of their whereabouts.

The Torch of Peace campaign is to  high light the plight of  Kashmiri people (without disturbing the enjoyment of the games) and expose the  state oppression by the  huge occupying army of  so called largest democracy in the world-India which continues to deny to the people of Jammu Kashmir, their internationally recognised, inherent and inalienable right of self determination.

The Torch of Peace is also to expose the   indifference and failure of the big' powers' and the United Nations to secure the FREEDOM for the people of Kashmir which the world body promised the people of Jammu Kashmir. 

The-launch of the Torch of Peace is a reminder to the World Conscience of the continued enslavement and subjugation and forced division of 17 million people and their land between India and Pakistan.

Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF)-UK chapter is holding its zonal convention under the new party constitution which was finalised recently following the merger of the two main groups lead by Mr. Amanullah Khan and Mr. Yasin Malik.

The  JKLF convention is to be held in Birmigham on Sunday, 1^st July, 2012. JKLF members throughout the UK have  submitted nominations to election commissioner, prof Zafar Khan, the deadline for which closed on 21 June 2012.

In a  statement issued by  prof Zafar Khan, who is one of  the two members of the organisational committee along with Prof Azmat Khan appointed to oversea the re-organisation of the party in UK,  said that the members were enthusiastic about renewing their commitment for their part in the liberation movement and will re-affirm their pledge for the just struggle for the independence movement at the historic party convention which will see a reunited party on one platform.  

The statement said that “65 year ago the British left Jammu-Kashmir divided, occupied and subjugated by its neighbours but for the past 65 years their nation had endured gross human rights violations, unprecedented military suppression and violence but the struggle to strive for self-determination has continued through thick and thin, and we will be continued at the international level with renewed vigour. .

“35 year ago, Kashmiri expatriates lead by Amanullah Khan founded the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) in Birmingham-UK, which has become the single most powerful movement advocating for inalienable and unfettered right to self-determination for the 19 Million people of Jammu-Kashmir. Over the past 2 decades the JKLF has won international recognition through a younger and dynamic revolutionary leader, Yasin Malik, and it has now become the most popular pro-independence organisation with strong membership in all parts of the state, including, Kashmir valley, Jammu, Ladakh, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Balitistan and throughout the world-wide Kashmiri Diaspora. It represents unwavering, unyielding and selfless commitment for peaceful and democratic resolution of the issue for self-determination and its members will renew their commitment to the freedom movment and will set out seek international attention and support in the years to come ".

To mark the 28^th martyrdom anniversary of Maqbool Butt Shaheed, JKLF in Britain  organised a protest rally in front of Indian High commission in London, Despite severe cold and sub zero temperature, hundreds of people including children from different cities of England participated. Protesters who were lead by Prof Zafar Khan shouted slogans of “Stop Killings in Kashmir”, “Handover remains of Maqbool Butt” and in favour of complete independence of Jammu Kashmir.

A memorandum was also presented to the officials of the embassy on this occasion. The memorandum asked the Indian government to immediately halt all the human rights violations in occupied Kashmir. It also demanded to the Indian government to handover the mortal remain of Maqbool Butt Shaheed to his relatives for proper burial.

Speaking on this occasion, senior leader of JKLF in Britain, Prof Zafar Khan, paid rich tributes to Maqbool Butt Shaheed and said that the only way forward for Kashmiri nation is to follow the teachings in practical terms and the ideology of this great Kashmiri leader. JKLF leaders said that well over 80,000 Kashmiris have been killed since the popular uprising began in June 1988. Zafar Khan said that Kashmiris will continue to fight for the independence of entire Jammu Kashmir under the leadership of supreme head of JKLF Mr. Amanullah Khan and Chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik. Zafar Khan also condemned Indian Governments decision to detain Mr yasin Malik and other cadres of JKLF on Maqbool Butt Day in Srinagar.

Other JKLF leaders who also spoke on this occasion and paid tributes to Shaheed Maqbool Butt include Mahmood Hussain, Aslam Mirza, Malik Latif Khan, Syed Tahseen Gilani, Sabir Gul, Malik Mushtaq, Kaman Afsar etc.

The two main functionaries of pro-independence Kashmiri organization “Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front” (JKLF) have been merged into each other following a meeting of their respective heads Mr. Ammanullah Khan and Mr. Muhammad Yasin Malik on 12^th of August 2011 at former’s residence in Rawalpindi, wherein they had in principle decided to reunite the party. The decisions regarding the re-unification of JKLF were announced by both these leaders during press conferences simultaneously held in Islamabad, Pakistan and Srinagar, IHK. These decisions were agreed upon after an eight (8) member Unity Facilitation Committee (UFC), four (4) members from each side, had held a number of meetings  to finalize the modalities since its formation by the two leaders on 12^th of August.

The SH shall refer any emerging dispute or controversy for discussions to the highest level decision making authoritative body the SC after having consultations with the party chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik.

Under the leadership of chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik, this 19 member committee shall work until the formation of SC and its convention after having held the zonal conventions in their respective zones.

A constitutional committee, based on the members of constitutional experts, shall also be formed to reproduce / reframe the constitution of JKLF. It’s members are:

On certain important issues and party institutions, and their possible role in future, it was decided that their policy shall be formulated and finalized after having discussions in SC lead by Muhammad Yasin Malik, wherein suggestion, if any, from SH shall also be considered and taken into account.
